Our goal is to reach the minimum, or the bottom, of that function. Let’s assume that our function looks like in Fig.1 and a random point is chosen the red point. If C has a small number of variables this is a viable solution, but if C has a large number of variables, as it is often the case for machine learning algorithms, this is not a practical solution anymore and we need another approach. One way of doing this is to compute the derivatives and try to find the extremum point of C. The re are often cases when we want to minimize a function, let’s say C.
